Gabrielle Koehlhoeffer Trio
Tuesday, October 11, 2022, DAI Heidelberg
In cooperation with Montpellier House and La Région Occitanie
When you see and hear a double bass for the first time at the age of ten, the instrument's mighty body either intimidates you - or leaves you gobsmacked and fascinated. In Gabrielle Randrian Koehlhoeffer's case, the latter was the case, and the fascination was so strong that she switched from the piano, on which she had already received lessons, to the bass. With a classical education, of course, it started. But at some point she found jazz, or jazz found her. During her studies in Montpellier - Heidelberg's twin city - she had already lost herself completely to it. The bassist, born in 1989, has performed in recent years with many instrumentalists on the French scene - with Leila Olivesi, Michel Marre, Denis Fournier, Pierre Coulon Cerisier, Eric Séva or Gaël Horellou. And has also formed her own trio into a multi-faceted entity. Madagascar, the country of her ancestors, has as much influence on the music and compositions of Gabrielle Randrian Koehlhoeffer as the tradition of the piano trio. Thus, in this band, sophisticated percussive playing meets nonchalantly appropriated classicism, all presented with southern French ease.
