Nigun Quartet
The concert was organized by Summertime TLV JazzFest Tel Aviv as part of Enjoy Jazz 2023, which unfortunately had to be postponed and will take place this year instead.
Nigun is Hebrew for melody and refers primarily to religious songs. The Nigun Quartet around bassist Opher Schneider, who works with many Israeli and international musicians, takes sacred melodies, rhythmizes them, spins traditional threads and combines them with an imaginative jazz language. There is a theory that great Jewish jazz composers such as George Gershwin were influenced by the synagogue and Hasidic melodies - improvisation plays an important role here. This is where the Nigun Quartet comes in. The Times of Israel wrote that with Nigun you could encounter one of the best jazz quartets ever.
In addition to Schneider, drummer Yosi Levi, who is also active in the reggae scene, pianist Moshe Elmakias, who has performed on stage with Manu Katché and the Tal Gamlieli Trio, and saxophonist Tom Lev, who studied at the Berklee School of Music and is now one of the most sought-after instrumentalists on the scene, all contribute to this.
