International symposium on the social significance of jazz - during the 14th Enjoy Jazz Festival artists, academics and journalists discuss at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies

The significance of politics and human rights issues in American and European jazz will be discussed by artists, academics and journalists at an international symposium hosted by the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) at Ruperto Carola on 8 and 9 November 2012. The event entitled "Lost in Diversity: A Transatlantic Dialogue on the Social Relevance of Jazz" is part of this year's Enjoy Jazz Festival and will be led by sociologist and musicologist Dr. Christian Broecking. As part of the symposium, Alexander von Schlippenbach and Vijay Iyer will perform in the auditorium of the Alte Universität. The organisers have also been able to secure the musicians Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef as keynote speakers. It is the first time ever that jazz greats will discuss the topic together with scholars and renowned critics from the USA and Europe. The conference is sponsored by BASF SE.
