International symposium on the social significance of jazz - artists, academics and journalists discuss the topic at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies during the 14th Enjoy Jazz Festival

The significance of politics and human rights issues in American and European jazz will be discussed by artists, academics and journalists at an international symposium hosted by the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) at Ruperto Carola on november 8 and 9, 2012. The event, entitled "Lost in Diversity: A Transatlantic Dialogue on the Social Relevance of Jazz", is part of this year's Enjoy Jazz Festival and will be chaired by sociologist and musicologist Dr. Christian Broecking. As part of the symposium, Alexander von Schlippenbach and Vijay Iyer will perform in the auditorium of the Old University. The organizers have also secured the musicians Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef as keynote speakers. This is the first time ever that jazz greats will be discussing the topic together with academics and renowned critics from the USA and Europe. The conference is sponsored by BASF SE.
