Ahmed
Friday, October 9, 2026, dasHaus
The American jazz musician Ahmed Abdul-Malik is one of the pioneers of what later became known as world music. In his art, he combined elements from American, Arab, and East African cultures in an open and experimental way to create vibrant, forward-looking jazz.
The quartet أحمد [Ahmed], consisting of Pat Thomas, Antonin Gerbal, Joel Grip, and Seymour Wright, is dedicated to the music of Abdul-Malik, who died in 1993, and reinterprets it. The result is stomping, relentlessly driving music that is technically perfect, but ultimately just swings along with you.
