Translinear Light: The Music of Alice Coltrane featuring Ravi Coltrane with Special Guest Brandee Younger
Friday, March 5, 2027, Stadthalle Concert Hall, Heidelberg
To mark the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, his son, tenor saxophonist Ravi Co Coltrane, is giving him—and us—a special gift: With “Translinear Light II,” he will perform the music of his mother, Alice Coltrane. The program is named after the album of the same name that mother and son recorded in 2004. This took place three years before the death of the extraordinary pianist and harpist, who made jazz history with albums such as “Journey in Satchidananda” and her fusion of Indian sacred music and improvisation. The intimate, meditative dialogue between Ravi and Alice Coltrane will now be performed once again, this time featuring the outstanding, Grammy-winning harpist Brandee Younger—playing Alice Coltrane’s original harp. They are accompanied by a top-tier trio featuring pianist David Virelles, bassist Robert Hurst, and Jeff “Tain” Watts, the longtime drummer for Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Touchingly tender.
