Festival au Désert en exil presents Music from Mali
Thursday, October 12, 2023, Karlstorbahnhof
The Festival au Désert was founded in Mali in 2001. Originally, it was dedicated to the Tuareg tradition, but also to music from neighboring countries in particular. As the security situation became increasingly precarious, it was eventually held at various locations outside Timbuktu. After the military coup in 2012, the festival could no longer be held in its original form. Since 2013, this event, which is so important for Mali, has been in exile - events are organized with various partners in different countries. All the better that it is now also a guest at Enjoy Jazz . The Festival au Désert brings a very contemporary artist to the metropolitan region in many respects: Kader Tarhanine, who was born in Niger to Malian parents from Menaka and Timbuktu and grew up in southern Algeria, has a sense for the rich heritage of his homeland(s) - the Sahel-Sahara region.
He combines traditional rhythmic forms and poetic Arabic lyrics with pop music motifs. He is also a child of his time in another respect: He became famous a good ten years ago thanks to social media: His song "Tarhanine Tegla" made him a star worldwide in the Tuareg diaspora - and also gave him his stage name. In the meantime, the masterful guitarist has become a regular on the stages of Africa and Europe, he performs with well-known Malian musicians and will soon no longer be revered only among Tuareg.
