Jamie Baum Quartet & Anke Helfrich Trio

With flutist Jamie Baum’s quartet and pianist Anke Helfrich’s trio, two ensembles come together that are seasoned veterans of every musical style (including traditional ones) and are hard to beat when it comes to innovative, joyful playing. As soloists and composers, their leaders are among the most distinctive voices of our time. Both have earned their stripes on the New York scene, and both have studied under great masters—Anke Helfrich studied with Kenny Barron, among others, while Jamie Baum studied with Jaki Byard and Richie Beirach. Both have shared the stage with jazz’s top tier throughout their careers and have released outstanding albums. Introducing their equally talented fellow musicians would go beyond the scope of this article—but let’s highlight Leo Genovese, who has worked with Esperanza Spalding and Wayne Shorter, and Dietmar Fuhr, who has played with David Liebman and Kurt Rosenwinkel, among others.
