Listening Session: A Love Supreme

Four movements, one masterpiece—saxophonist John Coltrane’s album *A Love Supreme* is something truly special. But why, exactly? Why do these nearly 33 minutes of quartet improvisation enjoy such cult status in jazz history? And why is it worth listening to this music, regardless of whether you like improvised music or not? Julia Neupert first studied musicology and German language and literature at the University of Leipzig, then music journalism at the Karlsruhe University of Music. She subsequently worked as a writer and host for various ARD programs and has been the jazz editor at SWR Kultur since 2008. From 2019 to 2025, she was a lecturer in jazz history at the Bern University of the Arts.

Konrad Bott studied musicology and piano at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and then music journalism at the Karlsruhe University of Music. After completing an internship at Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg, he joined SWR as a jazz editor in 2023.
