Matinee: "MY SOUL'S WILL TO LIVE" Charles Mingus 100
Sunday, October 16, 2022, Private: Theater im Pfalzbau
An event of the Friends of Enjoy Jazz
"I am Charles Mingus, half black man, not even white enough to pass for nothing but black. I am Charles Mingus, a famed jazzman, but not famed enough to make a living in this society". Charles Mingus was the paradox of a suffering inflicter: socially not infrequently uncontrollably uninhibited, compositionally of well-controlled clarity. He diagnosed himself as having a triple split personality. Accordingly, his autobiography begins with the words "In other words I am three." His aura was of a monstrous magnetism that both promoted and damaged careers. His passion was like a sea of possibilities. On the occasion of his 100th birthday this year, we want to try to get closer to the musician and human being Charles Mingus in a matinee. He wrote jazz history with standards like "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and his unique, repeatedly modified band concept. Two formations will present their view of Mingus: Actor (Grimme Award, among others) and jazz flutist august Zirner comes with renowned bassist Sven Faller. The matinee will be concluded by the trio around saxophonist Silke Eberhard, named after the Mingus quote "I am Three". The debut of this formation was included in the list of the "best albums of the year" several times in 2016, also internationally (including Down Beat).
