At first, it wasn't necessarily jazz. In the life of Shirley Tetteh, who was born in Great Britain in 1990 and whose parents once came to the island from Ghana, completely different guitar heroes played a role. Eric Clapton, for example. Or Jimmy Page. Not forgetting Jeff Beck. Perhaps not the worst teachers if you want to find out what you can do with a guitar. But, she once said, jazz simply felt more natural to her fingers at some point. "And that was the moment I became obsessed with it." Getting into jazz was also her step out into the world. And it could be quite exciting. This became particularly clear to her when, at 18, she attended the legendary Tomorrow's Warriors workshops, the project founded by Janine Irons and Gary Crosby to promote young talent, which has done a great deal to increase diversity and gender equality in jazz. Jazz was now at the center of Shirley Tetteh's interest. Although, it's not really that clear-cut. Like her peers Moses Boyd, Theon Cross, Sheila Maurice-Grey and Nubya Garcia, who also went through the Tomorrow's Warriors school, Tetteh incorporates all kinds of traditions and sounds into her music - jazz, African music, pop, soul. You can hear this in a wide variety of constellations. For example, when she works with Zara McFarlane or Gary Bartz. Of course, this also applies to the band projects in which she is significantly involved - with the septet Nerija, the sextet Maisha or the SEED ensemble. And it is particularly evident in her solo work, which can sometimes drift off into singer-songwriter territory. But one thing is certain: at her Enjoy Jazz solo concert, you can listen to a curiously playful guitarist, composer and singer whose passion, as she once confessed, is to perform and compose in a way that is entirely her own.
