SWR Jazz Award Cansu Tanrıkulu & Nick Dunston

The SWR Jazz Award not only ennobles an existing work, but can also be seen as an incentive for future creativity: With Ayse Cansu Tanrikulu and Nick Dunston, the 2024 jury is honoring "two free spirits whose creative energies complement and potentiate each other". The wealth of energy is already evident in the fact that Tanrikulu, born in Ankara in 1991 and a vocalist with a barely comprehensible style, and Dunston, born in Washington in 1996 and a bassist who often works conceptually, master various instruments, work as composers and producers, are at home in avant-garde improv contexts and also in various jazz and folk traditions.

The Berlin-based young stars call what they do "shape-shifting music". Their many musical partnerships are also open and changeable. Another one will be added to these at Enjoy Jazz : none other than the legendary drummer Joey Baron, who was influenced by Ornette Coleman, will expand the duo into a trio.
