The Necks

Over the course of its nearly 20-year history, the acclaimed Australian avant-garde jazz trio “The Necks” has developed mastery in the art of expansive improvisation. Blending ambient and minimal music, their slowly unfolding soundscapes span an hour or more and showcase the high art of improvisation by these three exceptional musicians. Microtonal shifts give rise to hypnotic, expansive sound textures in which the piano, bass, and drums merge into a single entity.  Founded in Sydney in 1987, “The Necks” have developed a unique, almost telepathic musical chemistry. In doing so, they explore the development and fading away of repetitive musical figures, incorporating the early serial structures of minimalists La Monte Young and Steve Reich and translating them into their own musical language.
