Untamed winter songs

In Romania, the singing of winter carols is an ancient and very popular custom. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, children and young people parade through the streets of villages and towns, from house to house and sing. Many songs have pre-Christian roots, others are religiously influenced.

The musicians Maria Balabas (vocals, field recordings), Mihai Balabaș (guitar, effects) and Marina Pingulescu (violin, vocals) have set out to reinterpret the same selection of traditional winter songs every year, with ever new variations in sound, rhythm and inserted sounds. The selected songs are old, carefully chosen after a long bibliographical research, but interpreted in a modern way. In this way, the winter songs become a space in which it is possible to reflect on transience and change.

The concert takes place as part of the exhibition "20 Years of Faces of the City of Literature". This is being presented in the anniversary year of the UNESCO City of Literature Heidelberg by formAD e.V. in cooperation with the Heidelberg City Library and the Heidelberg Cultural Office.
