Abdullah Ibrahim Trio
Wednesday, november 5, 2025, Pfalzbau
Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa's most influential pianist and jazz composer, turned 90 last year, and around this birthday he could be seen paying homage to his role model and mentor Duke Ellington together with Jason Moran in New York. You could hear him solo in Ravenna or with his trio in Berlin. He created a monument for eternity with his piece "Mannenberg", which became the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Together with Cleave Guyton Jr. and Noah Jackson, he now honors Enjoy Jazz, with which he has been closely associated for years. "3" is the title of his most recent, meditative recording with this formation - he gives his two fellow musicians a lot of freedom on it and yet is constantly present in this music. The trio occasionally transforms into a duo, and when Ibrahim enters or develops melodies and harmonies as a soloist, there is something contemplative about it: the pure essence shines through. His ideas just come, he once said. "You see the road opening up and follow the path." We love to accompany him on this journey.
