Alexandra Lehmler invites Apollonio Maiello & Jörg Brinkmann
Wednesday, 22. October 2025, Old Fire Station
The instrumentation is reminiscent of the classical piano trio of European music history: a keyboard instrument, a string instrument and a melody part. But instead of the violin or clarinet, the saxophone comes to the fore here - with its tonal complexity and expressiveness. Alexandra Lehmler (saxophone), Apollonio Maiello (piano) and Jörg Brinkmann (violoncello) form a chamber music unit in which the clarity of notated music is combined with the openness of improvised sound design.
Based on a shared sensitivity for structure, timbre and interaction, the trio unfolds a multi-layered musical dialog. Apollonio Maiello's harmonic sophistication on the piano meets Brinkmann's lyrical, percussive cello playing and Lehmler's colorful, often vocal saxophone lines. It is music that is both form-conscious and free - between classical architecture and jazz-based spontaneity.
This trio formation is not a mere fusion of styles, but a finely woven web of tradition and the present, improvisation and composition. It bows to classical chamber music and at the same time explores the tonal and narrative possibilities of current jazz languages - with curiosity, depth and a flair for the unpredictable.
