Dee Dee Bridgewater Quartet

We Exist
You can't inscribe more meaning into a project than that. Dee Dee Bridgewater, long recognized as one of the best jazz singers of all time, addresses two central social demands of our time in her new programme: female empowerment and the fight against racially motivated oppression. The program title "We Exist" refers to the album "We Insist! Freedom Suite Now" by Max Roach with Abbey Lincoln - one of, if not the most important album of the civil rights movement. Like today, America and the world were in crisis mode back then. Although Bridgewater herself has since become largely independent in the still male-dominated business - she produces her own records and has her own record company - she is still an exception. Against this background, the all-female line-up of the evening is not just an artistic statement. Dee Dee Bridgewater shows attitude. Both internally and externally. About her shaved head, for example, she says: "I didn't want women to be defined by their hair. Shaving your head is a very liberating experience." This also applies to her concerts.
