Matinee: Healing - Soundtrack of change
The quest for healing concerns environmental challenges such as climate change as well as political and social crises. According to the 2023 Democracy Index, only 7.8 percent of the world's population live in a "full democracy". The UNHCR reports over 117 million refugees.
Music, especially jazz, plays an important role in this. Aretha Franklin emphasized the encouraging and empowering power of music, which promotes values such as education and civic participation. Jazz, especially the spiritual jazz of the 1960s, is seen as an expression of healing. Artists such as John Coltrane and younger musicians such as Kamasi Washington link music with social movements.
Music has often accompanied social movements, such as the American civil rights movement. Jazz became the "soundtrack of change" and serves as a tool for healing and change. The therapeutic effect of music, confirmed by studies, is being researched by experts such as Prof. Dr. Sabine Koch from the Faculty of Therapy Sciences at SRH Heidelberg and the Research Institute for Artistic Therapies (RIArT) at Alanus University Alfter/Bonn . Together with Enjoy Jazz festival director Rainer Kern, who has made "healing" the theme of his current festival, she discusses music and (social) healing processes.
The discussion will be moderated by music journalist Sophie Emilie Beha.
