James Brandon Lewis Quartet
Friday, October 24, 2025, Karlstorbahnhof
Quartet 2025
If anyone has literally absorbed jazz in almost all its facets, it is James Brandon Lewis. Charlie Haden, Geri Allen, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker, Joshua Redman, Karl Berger and Jamie Branch - the saxophonist, who has been awarded the "German Jazz Prize" among others, has worked with them all. These experiences are the stuff of a musician who, as the New York Times puts it, "embodies and transcends tradition". He comes to Enjoy Jazz in the same line-up with which he recorded the brilliant album "Code of Being", which sounds just as existential as its title. Full of sometimes highly concentrated energy, James Brandon Lewis also allows himself the luxury of dreamlike melodies. It is no exaggeration to describe the saxophonist as one of the musicians of the moment in contemporary jazz. And that is almost an understatement in view of the homage paid by Sonny Rollins, who once revolutionized saxophone playing with his "Stream of Consciousness" method: "When I listen to you, I listen to Buddha, I listen to Confucius, I listen to the deeper meaning of life. You are keeping the world in balance." - What more can we say.
