Cash desk overall
It seems entirely logical that Kassa Overall, the notorious border crosser between avant-garde jazz and hip-hop, has landed on the British Warp label with his third album Animals (2023) after his two albums Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz (2019) and I Think I'm Good (2020). There, the academically trained drummer and MC is now labelmate of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher or Flying Lotus.
According to his own statement, Kassa Overall conceives his music as the soundtrack to a "universal diary", whose breathlessness and nervousness actually strike a chord with the crisis-ridden 1920s of the 21st century. This remarkable horizon might have something to do with the fact that the list of those Overall has worked with so far includes names like Vijay Iyer, Theo Croker, Billy Hart and Peter Evans on the one hand, and Yoko Ono, Marc Ribot and Arto Lindsay on the other. The question "Is it jazzy hip-hop or beat-informed jazz?" seems idle. It is simply contemporary music in the best sense of the word
