The exciting thing about retrofuturistic cocktails is the mix of ingredients. In the case of the duo Kit Sebastian, who hit the tracks in London in 2018, it's a complex composition whose ingredients don't quite seem to fit at first. Here is the recipe for "Anatolian Lo-Fi Samba": First of all, there are the somewhat obscure experiments of 1970s Turkish psychedelic rock. Do names like Erkin Koray, Selda Bağcan or Fehiman Uğurdemir ring a bell? No? Just imagine that The Beatles had only reached East Anatolia on their way to India. Fitting for this: The music of the wonderful compilation "Pomegranates. Persian Pop, Funk, Folk and Psych of the 60s and 70s" (Finders Keepers Records) and a good shot of cosmopolitan Brazilian "Tropicalismo"! To prevent the mix from tending towards second-hand retro-global pop, it is counterbalanced with Brit-pop à la Broadcast or Stereolab. The whole thing is rounded off by a hint of tongue-in-cheek irony, the vocals of Merve Erdem and the delicate arrangements of multi-instrumentalist Kit Martin. And because Merve Erdem is also an active video artist, video clips like "Agitate" look as if they were "borrowed" directly from the cutting rooms of Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut. Is it actually possible to overdose on good taste?
