Today, Mali is a country dominated by Islamism and the military; after independence in 1960, however, cultural life flourished there, and jazz music in particular was held in high esteem worldwide - until a military coup put an end to this particular variety of big band sound with African and Cuban influences in the 1970s. Now, however, the musicians of the Berlin Omniversal Earkestra are taking a trip to Mali to celebrate this music in conversations and jam sessions with veterans of Mali jazz.
