Nicole Johänntgen Trio
Monday, 16. October 2023, Ella & Louis
When Nicole Johänntgen lived in New York, where she refined her saxophone playing and worked intensively with African rhythms and odd meters, she also made a detour to New Orleans. This resulted in the "Henry" project, with sousaphone player Steven Glenn, among others. The tuba also has a supporting role in her new trio, an instrument that was once replaced by the bass in jazz and rarely appears anymore. Jon Hansen, an exceptional tuba player, along with percussionist David Stauffacher, provide the foundation for Johänntgen's energetic, richly shaped playing. "Labyrinth" is the name of the album recorded live - a groovy, danceable, rousing work.
By the way: Johänntgen has lived in Switzerland for a long time, but comes from Saarland (which awarded her the 2022 Art Prize for outstanding artistic achievements) and studied in Mannheim. A return to the homeland, then - with music that is quite worldly.
