The Young Mothers

The Young Mothers lurched back and forth between moments of musical chaos and sonic beauty, wrote Glide Magazine. And meant it as a compliment, of course. However, the verb "lurching" doesn't quite capture it. The Young Mothers are very aware of what they are doing, and what may appear to be chaos carries the seeds of structure and melodiousness. Genre boundaries are not ignored by the band led by Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, they simply don't exist. Flaten has worked with musicians such as Bugge Wesseltoft and Joshua Redman, but above all he is an important name in the free jazz scene. The Young Mothers mix improvisation with hip-hop, funk, hardcore and grindcore, jazz with very tight rhythm textures, wacky lyrics with cutting guitar riffs. The Norwegian-American ensemble's latest record is called "Better If You Let It". If you follow their advice, you will be thrown into a sound frenzy. That's a promise!
