Youn Sun Nah
Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Karlstorbahnhof
Youn Sun Nah was once asked why jazz fascinates her so much, why she gave up her career as a musical singer, moved from her hometown of Seoul to Paris and studied there? Her answer is as simple as it is convincing: "There are no boundaries in jazz." Where there do seem to be boundaries, she transcends them effortlessly. The repertoire of this versatile, multi-award-winning singer goes far beyond the jazz canon. On her latest album "Elles", she interprets pieces by musicians such as Björk, Sarah Vaughan, Grace Jones, Roberta Flack, Edith Piaf, Grace Slick, Maria João and Nina Simone. In doing so, Youn Sun Nah develops a sensitive feel for the peculiarities of the songs, while at the same time respectfully changing them to give them new layers. Her precisely phrased interpretations, which encompass entire emotional scales, can now be experienced in the most intimate setting - together with pianist Eric Legnini, who is also not entirely unknown.
