First Summer Concert 2017 with the Joshua Redman Trio

If you want to find out more about the musical preferences and cues of Californian Joshua Redman, you need at least three encyclopaedias: one on jazz, another on rock & pop and a third on world music. Modesty, as the saying goes, may be an adornment, but Joshua Redman doesn't want to decorate anything, doesn't want to spread pretty sound arabesques over familiar terrain with his saxophone, to which he took the diversions via the clarinet.
Since the son of Dewey Redman, also a saxophonist, began two decades ago to try himself out in ever new bands of his own and as a team player with almost all the greats of jazz, he has regularly set standards rather than mere scent marks. Whether with drummer Brian Blade and Sam Yahel on the Hammond as the Elastic Band, whether with Eric Clapton and BB King in the Louisiana Gator Boys, whether with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones or, as recently, with Brad Mehldau: Redman always leads his listeners to the limits of their own hunting grounds with fascinating sounds and then lures them charmingly and irresistibly into foreign territories. Conversion never excluded, great enjoyment always guaranteed.
