First summer concert 2017 with the Joshua Redman Trio

If you want to find out more about the musical preferences and cues of Californian Joshua Redman, you need at least three encyclopaedias: one on jazz, another on rock & pop and a third on world music. Modesty may be an ornament, as the saying goes, but Joshua Redman doesn't want to embellish anything, he doesn't want to spread pretty arabesques of sound over familiar terrain with his saxophone, to which he took a detour via the clarinet.
Since the son of Dewey Redman, also a saxophonist, began two decades ago to try out new bands of his own and as a team player with almost all the greats of jazz, he has regularly set standards rather than simply making his mark. Whether with drummer Brian Blade and Sam Yahel on Hammond as the Elastic Band, whether with Eric Clapton and BB King in the Louisiana Gator Boys, whether with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones or, as recently with Brad Mehldau: Redman always leads his listeners to the limits of their own hunting grounds with fascinating sounds and then lures them charmingly and irresistibly into foreign territories. Conversion never excluded, great enjoyment always guaranteed.
